Medical Schools Abroad – How to Prepare Yourself for Applying for a Residency

When you are preparing for a future as a medical professional, one of your most important steps will be applying to residency programs. Like applying to a Caribbean medical school, this application process will involve far more than simply applying to programs and waiting for acceptance replies.
The staff at Windsor University School of Medicine (WUSOM) wants to help our students in every way that we can. Use the following overview as a resource when preparing for your future residency placement.
Steps You Can Take to Get Ready for Residency Application Season
You may not realize that many of your actions now could affect your chances of getting the residency match you desire. By employing a few careful strategies now, you could help to increase the number of opportunities you have post-graduation from medical school in St. Kitts.
Take these steps now to further your chances of successfully applying to residency programs:
• Refresh Your Resume – Your resume will likely have changed over the course of your time in medical school. Make sure that you update this to reflect the experience you have gained during your time at WUSOM. You should highlight any awards and achievements you have earned. Point out relevant volunteer or work experience. Doing this will also help to prepare you for filling out residency program applications.
• Do Your Research – You must do some research if you hope to find a residency program that appeals to you. Now is the time to think about the locations you might prefer: If your hometown is Chicago, Boston, or Calgary, do you hope to be placed in that area if possible? Would you rather work in a university setting or in a medical center that is primarily community based? As an international medical graduate, you may find certain websites helpful, such as the Match a Resident site.
• Create a Personal Statement – One way to be clear about your goals is to write a personal statement that describes your personal story. This statement might also outline what you have to offer prospective residency programs. You will be required to provide such information when applying via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®), so getting prepared now will save you time in the future. You may need to devote more time to this statement than you expect. Be sure to create unique statements with regard to each specialty for which you are applying.
• Use Social Media to Your Advantage – Explore and join residency match groups on social media sites, such as Facebook. By doing so, you could get many of your questions about application and placement answered. Also, be sure that you take a good look at your own social media pages. Get rid of any information that might not appeal to those who conduct the placement interviews for residency programs.

Making the Most of the Residency Application Process

You might prepare for residency application season in a variety of ways, but the most important factor is that you actually do prepare. Do not leave important details to the last moments, when you will likely have just as much (or more) to do and think about as you do now. If you have questions about the residency application and placement process, do not hesitate to reach out to the team at WUSOM.
