Working to achieve any type of degree can take some adjustment, but attendance at a medical school presents its own unique set of challenges. Even in a gorgeous setting such as St. Kitts, you may sometimes feel that the obstacles you face are difficult to overcome.
Fortunately, you will not be alone as you pursue your Caribbean medical school education. The faculty members at Windsor University School of Medicine (WUSOM) want you to succeed. We offer a wealth of support services to help you stay focused and to prevent you from feeling permanently overwhelmed.
Support Resources for Medical Students
WUSOM provides students with a strong support system. We encourage you to take advantage of the services we offer. In fact, registering for our support program is mandatory for students. Whether you live in the area or come from a distant place, such as Houston, Calgary, or Newark, you may need time to adjust to the robust pace, schedule, and workload of a medical student.
These are some of the resources that could benefit you during your time at WUSOM:
• Student Advisory and Support Program (SASP) – Registration in this program is a requirement. SASP provides academic support, as well as help with maintaining an optimal lifestyle while attending classes in St. Kitts. You will first be assigned a mentor. This individual will advise you in relation to your academic objectives. You might discuss topics that affect all students, such as proper sleep habits, your diet, physical fitness, time management, and developing study skills. You should feel free to raise any issues that could impede your ability to attain your medical school goals. You mentor may refer you to various other resources and programs that pertain to your circumstances.
• Career Counseling – You can also take advantage of career counseling while you are enrolled at WUSOM. A Caribbean medical education should provide you with plenty of career opportunities, and you may be unsure about which path you wish to take. Be sure to discuss such concerns or any similar questions with your career counselor. We want you to get the most from your education, and that certainly includes establishing a plan of action based on your career goals.
• Useful Materials – You will also have access to materials that can help you with a variety of endeavors. You may view a Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). You can also listen to a residency webinar for more information about this process.
